If you didn’t get a chance to swing by The Barbary on Monday night to see Floor and Thrones, you actually missed out.
To start, Thrones is one guy (above). Literally. Joe Preston has been around a long time (The Melvins, High on Fire, and Earth) but it was a real treat to see him doing his own project. Through an array of samples, effects, and what looked like an electric Steinberger, Preston put together something truly unusual and incredibly heavy.
Floor is so incredibly good. I’m not even sure what else to say.
Yeah, we’ve all heard of Torche. Their new song was on Monday Night Football and all but Steve Brooks’ other baby, Floor (right), should really be taking the spotlight.
They played a mix of old and new and the crowd was incredibly happy about it. Who can be upset about throwing “Twink” in the mix?
Though some fans may complain that it’s hard to tell the difference between Brooks’ two projects, Floor’s set began to show where the band is going, and how it differs from it’s close cousin. With a new album coming out, it seems like those true colors will start to shine.
In the end, the show was just the right length, ending by 9:30. An efficient, heavy show … can’t beat that for a Monday. Sometimes that’s all you need to start off the week right.
By the end of the night, The Barbary was packed with such an interesting cast of characters. Proof that in Philly, no matter who you are, anyone can enjoy a good, serious head bang.
