Intern Bree’s Weekend Picks (And More!): So Many Philly Bands, You Won’t Care How Hot It Is.
Every Thursday, our JUMP mag intern, Bree Wood, offers her suggestions for fun Philly music stuff for the upcoming weekend (and more).
FRIDAY
Toy Soldiers and Thom McCarthy at FDR Park
Sure, it’s going to be crazy hot but the music of Toy Soldiers is made for sultry nights. This is a free event and you can bring your own food, drinks, dogs, whatever. This is the second event of the FDR Park summer series, curated by the talented Danielle Alderman.
SATURDAY
Of Monsters and Men at The Radio 104.5 Block Party at The Piazza at Schmidt’s
Pissed Jeans, A place to Bury Strangers and Gang at Morgan’s Pier
Two free shows! First up is Of Monsters and Men. It is part of the Radio 104.5 Block Party series. Of Monsters and Men are a folk/indie pop band from Iceland. It’s a free, for-all-ages show so don’t miss it!
The second free show is at Morgan’s Pier. Pissed Jeans is a hardcore/punk/noise band from Allentown. Side note: I had a sub come in for my writing class and he was the dad of one of the band members. It’s weird but cool meeting people’s parents, and then seeing the kids play in a band. These guys are loud, aggressive and full of attitude. And Gang? Love them.
SUNDAY
Kill Verona, Part Filth, Creepoid and Good Graces at The Barbary
Kill Verona is a Philly band from the earlier 2000s, and they will be reuniting this Sunday. They are a hardcore/pop punk band that also used to go by the name Little League. So, if you are feeling nostalgic and want to meet up with your younger self, you will thoroughly enjoy your night.
THURSDAY
Instamatic, Hot Guts, Future Blondes, Little Debbie and Night Sins at Underground Arts
Three Philly bands and two touring bands are filling out this lineup. The majority of the lineup is in the electronic and snyth genre, with a hint of Goth, creating a chilling sound. If you haven’t heard these Philly bands check them out.
