Weekend Music Picks: It’s A New Year. Keep Partying.

January 4, 2013

It’s going to be chilly this weekend so biking around town isn’t going to be fun. But it’s been a few days since your New Years hangover dissipated. It’s time to hit the town again and there are a few really good reasons to do so.

FRIDAY

Talking Heads Discussion for CaveCast at Philadelphia Art Alliance

Host Brian Cassidy will record a podcast discussion about the work of the Talking Heads, complete with lots of the great music. The one-hour event is followed by a dance party in the 100-year old mansion that houses the Art Alliance. There’s free Naragansett beer and Spodee wine starting at 10 PM until they run out.

Many Arms with Colin Fisher at The Rotunda

Philly’s guitar hero, Nick Millevoi, and his bandmates in the jazz-punk trio Many Arms will collaborate with Colin Fisher on tenor sax. Should make for an interesting show.

SunAirway01SATURDAY

Sun Airway at Johnny Brenda’s

We profiled Jon Barthmus‘ project in the very first issue of JUMP back in 2011 (photo above by Colin Kerrigan). Sun Airway was fresh off of pitchfork fame then, and things have exploded since. The band has toured the world with the likes of M83.

Arsin Mixtape Release at Black and Nobel

West Philly rapper Arsin will drop his new mixtape, sign autographs and perform during the afternoon. Lots of Philly talent are expected to show up, including Marsha Ambrosius, Gillie Da Kid, Tone Trump, Young Savage and others.

SUNDAY

Ghostlimb, Heavy Medical and Xanax at the First Unitarian Church

Philly hardcore crew Reign Supreme was listed as the headliner for this show and they are still pimping it on the facebook page. Regardless, this will be an insane early show full of loud hardcore.

Hivelords and Sadgiqacea at Kung Fu Necktie

Philly’s doom metal band, Hivelords, will blow out your ear drums. We caught them back in August when they played KFN with Sadgiqacea and our ears still hurt.

EricSlick02smallTUESDAY

Eric Slick at PhilaMOCA

Dr. Dog drummer Eric Slick, who also performs with Norwegian Arms, Ape School, Paper Cat, Lithuania and others (including Rich Mystics), will perform a live set as his self-produced documentary film runs behind him. This should be really interesting, and there will be a ton of local music folks in attendance. (Photo by Brandee Nichols).
