Tuesday Tune-Out: Birdie Busch and Carl Cheeseman @ PhilaMOCA.

January 23, 2013

BirdieBusch04Singer-songwriter Birdie Busch took the stage last night at PhilaMOCA with collaborator Carl Cheeseman and the two performed an array of free-form, serene, experimental music.

It was a special event, with the two sitting in front of a small audience while making delicate sounds with a variety of instruments. Birdie played the guitar, a ukelele and harmonica, as well as sang. At one point, she blew into her beer bottle, creating a soft toot, and it was difficult to tell whether that was part of the music or just her having fun between songs.

“I feel so comfortable here,” she said as the audience sat rapt in silence.

Birdie and Carl played several instrumental songs, including John Fahey’s “In Christ there is no East or West.” They ended the show with a cover of Hank Williams’ “Ramblin’ man.”

It was a nice segue into the second half of the night. After the performance, which was part of PhilaMOCA’s Tuesday Tune-Out series, the crowd watched “Who is Bozo Texino,” a black and white documentary about hobo life.

Next Tuesday wraps up the month of shows curated by WXPN’s John Vettese, and it will be a good one. Frances Quinlan of Hop Along will perform a solo set and she’ll play some new music. See show details here.
