What Commonwealth Choir never fails to bring to a show is energy. On stage, sweat is always flowing in abundance and tambourines are flying through the air. To say the band likes to jump around would be a bit of an understatement, especially for lead singer Davis Howley.

CommonwealthChoir03CommonwealthChoir02CommonwealthChoir04Made up of five musicians, four of whom originally come from Doyelstown, Commonwealth Choir formed in the fall of last year. They’ve been playing shows ever since, and are set to release their first EP this May.

On Wednesday, they played North Star Bar where they powered through a 45- minute set to bring life back to a night dulled by spring rain.

Commonwealth’s music is a constant up-tempo, poppy stream of indie rock with lots of percussion and keyboard thrown in from band member William Chamuris. It’s the kind of jam you want to hear if you’re in need of a little pick-me-up.

Commonwealth Choir’s short-term goal is to continue to up their involvement in the Philly music scene – meeting new bands, playing new venues and performing shows, of which many are already on the radar for this summer.

“Philly is an insane place, with unbelievable bands and an awesome community willing to support shows,” said Howley. “We’re really happy to be a part of it.”

Next up, they’ll head to The Fire on April 30 to play with Brooklyn-Based Modern Merchant before hitting the Hard Rock Café on May 10 for a performance with The Lawsuits and New Sweden.
