Scenes From On The Road With Cayetana and Ma Jolie.
Text and images by Jessica Flynn.
Cayetana and Ma Jolie returned yesterday from a ten-day Midwest tour called the “Hide Yr Kids, Hide Yr Snacks Tour.”
The bands traveled out to Cleveland for Weapons of Mass Creation, a three-day festival headlining bands such as Braid and Appleseed Cast. Cayetana and Ma Jolie finished the tour Sunday night at Coco66 in Brooklyn. This was the longest tour for both Philadelphia bands.
Cayetana is in the process of recording their first full-length album, which they are expecting in the spring. Look out for their music video for their song “Hot Dad Calendar” this fall.
Be sure to check out Ma Jolie on September 3rd at First Unitarian Church with Hop Along, Luther, and The Sidekicks. See here for details.
Also, keep an eye open for more tour photos from JUMP shooter Jessica Flynn. Find them over the coming days on her facebook page.

The sixth installment of the Absolut X tour hit Philly last night and if you missed it, you should chastise yourself, immediately.
Hosted at Philly’s legendary Electric Factory, the RSVP only and all free event was a Thursday night to rival all others (even if you went to the Night Market on South Street, which I know some of you did). Free admission, free drinks, free art and free music. What more could you want? Oh yeah, there was free food too. Read more…
Kyle Costill & Ortlieb’s Lounge: Working Non-stop For Success.
As part of our partnership with Philly Beer Scene magazine, we’re documenting Philly’s relationships between music and beer. For the fall issue of Philly Beer Scene, G.W. Miller III learned about Kyle Costill, the longtime musician who is turning Ortlieb’s, the legendary jazz club, into a haven for local music.
Stop by Ortlieb’s Lounge in Northern Liberties and chances are you’ll see Kyle Costill running around like crazy, doing a dozen different things at once. He serves drinks, assists the staff, works with bands and DJs and generally makes sure everyone is having a good time.
“If I work non-stop, I can make it successful,” says Costill, the bar’s manager, referring to his life’s mantra.
Bill Hanson & Milkboy: Finding the Perfect Combination.
As part of our partnership with Philly Beer Scene magazine, we’re documenting Philly’s relationships between music and beer. For the summer issue of Philly Beer Scene, G.W. Miller III hung out with Bill Hanson, one of the three partners who owns and operates Milkboy in Center City.
Bill Hanson and his brother-in-law Tommy Joyner were down the shore, watching the Phillies and drinking Scotch when Joyner got a phone call. The owner of a Center City building was looking for a tenant who would bring life to a long-neglected corner of Philadelphia.
After he hung up, Joyner looked at Hanson and asked, “Want to open a restaurant at 11th and Chestnut?”
Hanson, who had worked in the restaurant business for more than a decade by then, immediately said yes.

Nostalgia filled The Dell Music Center last Thursday night for 90’s R&B stars SWV, Dru Hill and Bell Biv DeVoe. More than 3,000 seats were filled at the sold-out, outdoor venue with people of all ages.
Also, in attendance was Philly songstress Marsha Ambrosius, who was there to celebrate her 36th birthday. She told the crowd to check out her new single “Without You,” featuring Ne-Yo, and expressed excitement about her birthday.
“I’m ready to turn it up, just like you,” she said.
This is Hardcore with Intern Bree: Day 4.

Sunday was the final chapter for This is Hardcore 2013. First, I would like to start off by thanking Joe Hardcore and all the people that make this possible for yet another Fest as well as all the bands for putting on an awesome show.
I would also like to thank all the “Jumpers” for participating in our mini interviews throughout the entire Fest. It was great to meet all of you and hear your individual stories and why you love This is Hardcore and what you came to see.
Sunday’s line up was a great topper to the weekend. For a couple of bands, this set meant more than any other set. Suicide File mentioned on stage their next show would be in 2020. This was also the last show for Trapped Under Ice. All the sets had their own special energy… girls knocking out boys in the pit, stage diving… there were so many people and once again it felt like the Electric Factory was going to explode. It is truly special to see so many people into the same scene in one place.
Ricart/Millevoi Quartet @ Ortlieb’s Lounge.
A few days before Nick Millevoi‘s Saturday record release show at Orlieb’s Lounge, we invited Nick to be a part of an upcoming monthly music industry networking night/local music showcase that JUMP will curate at The Painted Bride starting in October.
“I can’t remember if you’ve seen me play solo,” he said. “I play very loudly and, because of the nature of what I do with feedback, can’t be too flexible with my volume. Is that okay for this event? I just want to clear that so I don’t upset anyone!”
Yeah, we said. We know.
Then we locked him into the December show (details to come soon).
But man, he wasn’t kidding. And at the beyond-intimate confines of Ortlieb’s on Saturday, we experienced the full throttle impact of his avant-garde jazz/rock shredding.
Playing with his Ricart/Millevoi Quartet, featuring Ed Ricart on bass, Dan Blacksberg on trombone and Kevin Shea on drums, Nick and his bandmates created a cacophony of amazing sounds for the small but loyal crowd in attendance.
You can find a track from the new album below and the full album, Haitian Rail, here.
