Work Drugs: New Album Coming Next Week!

It takes a long time to find it but when you want to ride it, that ghost is gone. – “Mavericks”
“Mavericks” is a sonic groove that seeps into your skin like the hot summer sun. This title track reveals the impetus of Work Drugs’ new album, which is due out on June 21st.
Mates of State @ Underground Arts.

Mates of State brought their super upbeat vibes to Underground Arts last night and kept the crowd hyped with their newest jams.
The husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel played a variety of songs from their seven full albums. The group managed a modest crowd that brought a ton of energy and adoration.
The Slicks @ Underground Arts.
Siblings Julie and Eric Slick grew up with instruments in their hands. They went through the School of Rock and then they toured with the Adrian Belew Power Trio.
Eric joined Dr. Dog and Norwegian Arms (and he sits in on many other projects). Julie moved out West where she performs with Springs and other bands. They perform together every once in a while as Paper Cat but rarely do they share the stage anymore.
Which made last night so special. The two took the stage at Underground Arts for the debut of The Slicks.

Susan Slawson was a police officer for 20 years before mayor Michael Nutter tapped her to become commissioner of the city’s Recreation Department in 2008. Now, she oversees all city rec centers and she runs the city-owned Dell Music Center in Fairmount Park. G.W. Miller III spoke with her about the Dell’s recent renovations and the purpose of the historic, 83-year-old venue.
What do you have planned at the Dell this year?
Another wonderful, exciting summer filled with some of the best music and artists in the country, local and national.
Who do you have lined up?
Our goal is to open with Chaka Khan. She’s celebrating 40 years in music. Ledisi is going to be opening for her. We have Jeffrey Osborne and Stephanie Mills. WDAS will be celebrating 40 years of Tony Brown on the radio and that show will be with the Whispers, Chi-Lites, Stylistics and Breakwater.
Do you work with promoters to bring acts?
Believe it or not, we’re doing it ourselves.
The city runs a music venue?
We are a venue and the venue is managed by me. I have a wonderful staff. Everything that is involved in running a venue is done right here by City of Philadelphia employees. We’re leading the charge from booking artists to transportation to lights, sound, stage production.

Mobb Deep @ The Blockley.
Text and images by Jason Butsch.
Hip-hop legendsHavoc and Prodigy of Mobb Deep opened up their set Sunday at The Blockley with “Survival of the Fittest,” their hit from 1995’s The Infamous. Then they burned through 20 years of their music, including some new stuff. Havok’s performance of his solo track “Gone” was hype.
While the performance was tight, Havoc and Prodigy were relentless about selling T-shirts and encouraging the audience to instagram their show pics.
They closed the show with dimmed blue lights for “Quiet Storm” followed by “Shook Ones.”
Philly freestyler Mic Stew opened for Mobb Deep. Between songs, a woman near the stage asked Stew to sign her T-shirt.
“Yea, I’ll sign your titties,” he answered. “No, I’m just kidding. You a lady. I’ll sign your belly.”
Mic Stew and his DJ, Strategy, put on a long set, with several guest appearances thrown in (including Chill Moody). Stew encored with a long freestyle, pumping everyone up for Mobb.
Father John Misty @ Union Transfer.
Text and images by Grace Dickinson.
“My family asked what I was doing later, and I said, ‘I’m going to be shaking my little ass in front of some degenerates in Philly,” said Joshua Tillman, a man not afraid, and actually quite good at moving his booty. “That’s what I’m going to be doing.”
Tillman came straight to Union Transfer Saturday from his sister’s high school graduation for a show that would include plenty of theatrics, dancing and re-tucking of his dressy grad button-up.
The tall, shaggy-haired musician is the person behind Father John Misty, a new moniker under which he released his latest album, Fear Fun, in May of last year. The album’s a folky, lyrically amusing one that will certainly beg your ears for another listen. But Tillman’s live performance is what’ll really make it memorable.
