Discounted Shirts from Wear Liberty for JUMP Fans.

March 21, 2013

WearLibertyThe folks at Wear Liberty just told us that they’ll give JUMP readers a 20 percent discount on any of their custom-made shirts, which are all Philadelphia-themed. Check out their selection here.

Type in JUMP in the discount box at checkout.

The Wear Liberty folks are advertisers in the mag, meaning they financially help us cover the local music scene. So show them some love.

Our advertising is wicked cheap. We all volunteer our time in running this website and printing (and distributing) 10,000 copies of the magazine, which is free for everyone. Ad dollars fund our printing costs.

Help us tell stories about great Philadelphia artists by advertising with or donating to JUMP. Thanks.

Disclosure @ Union Transfer.

March 20, 2013

I experienced some sibling envy last night at Disclosure’s Philly debut at Union Transfer.

The English DJ duo, consisting of brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence, came to treat an excited crowd to chill singles from their 2012 EP The Face, as well as debut some new tracks. These young artists (both under age 21) are unquestionably gifted. Their explosive live set was a very funky way to set off a Tuesday night.

March 20, 2013

ADayWithoutLovesmallText by Beth Ann Downey.

Philly-based band A Day Without Love puts the motion back into emo-alternative rock with their new song “Island,” out now for free download.

Recorded at Fresh Produce Studios above The Fire by producer Jake Detwiler, “Island” is the first single off the group’s forthcoming EP of the same name. It’s set for release on April 16.

The band started as a solo acoustic project for frontman Brian Walker (above) but grew into a four-piece with Detwiler on bass, lead guitarist Jullian Wallace and drummer Andrew Ryan.

Check out the live line-up at 9 p.m. on May 10 at The Fire for the band’s album release show, also featuring Philly rock bands When Ships Collide and Parple, as well as Lancaster folksters Bretheren.

Rick@SXSW: June Divided, DRGN King, Bleeding Rainbow and The Cold Fronts Explain SXSW.

March 18, 2013

JuneDividedSXSWWhat is SXSW?

One way to find out the true nature of this “showcase” is to ask the Philadelphia acts that traveled by van the 1663 miles (give or take) from Philly to Austin. Our Rick Kauffman went to Texas and spoke to the members of The Cold Fronts, Bleeding Rainbow, DRGN King and June Divided, who all gave their insights on the beast.

BTW: everyone agreed that finding a place to park their van was the worst part of the entire trip.

Pat Martino @ Chris’ Jazz Cafe.

March 18, 2013

PatMartino06smallIt seemed like most of the music world was in Texas over the weekend for SXSW and half of Philly was peeing in alleys er, celebrating the anniversary of St. Patrick’s death in the 5th century.

We took a different route. Instead of the out-of-hand, party time stuff we usually attend, on Friday we went to Chris’ Jazz Cafe to listen to the legendary guitarist Pat Martino.

NEW VIDEOS: Mic Stew and DRGN King.

March 14, 2013

Today, we bring you two brand new videos from a pair of our favorite Philly artists/bands.

Above is the first single from Mic Stew‘s forthcoming album, PEACEWORLD. It drops on April 23.

Below is the first new video from DRGN King‘s January release, Paragraph Nights. You can learn more about DRGN King in the spring issue of JUMP, which hits streets next week.

New Music To Get You Through The Day: El Malito & the 33rd Century, Khari Mateen and Nothing.

March 13, 2013

It’s Wednesday. Midweek. The weekend, well, it seems really, really far away. So here are a few new videos for you to get you through the day.

Above, it’s a new video for the El Malito & the 33rd Century classic, “Platypus.” This is a crowd fave during live shows. And like the live shows, there is plenty of nearly naked Les Rivera, the band’s frontman.

Below, there is more male nudity, this time from Khari Mateen, the amazingly talented cellist-turned-producer-turned-artist.

Finally, here’s the new video from Nothing. It’s out just in time for the guys’ trip to SXSW.

Point Breeze and Amanda X @ PhilaMOCA.

March 13, 2013

PointBreeze01Bernie from Point Breeze (above) pleaded to the crowd last night at PhilaMOCA to not just sit in chairs to watch the show.

“That would be really weird,” he said.
