Eric Slick Performing Primal Essence @ PhilaMOCA

January 9, 2013

This month, John Vettese (below, on the right) and The Key are hosting the Tuesday Tune-Out shows at PhilaMOCA and they kicked off their portion of the ongoing series with an amazing show.

Dr. Dog drummer Eric Slick, who also drums for Norwegian Arms, Ape School and others, performed a solo show set to a video he produced (with the help of his Norwegian Arms bandmate Brendan Mulvihill and friend Andy Molholt). The video, titled Primal Essence, featured Slick in a dream sequence – in which he had a romantic liaison with a slice of pizza. Read more…

Although there is no telephone booth or disguise involved like in Superman’s double life, producer Wes Manchild definitely maintains two different personas.

He is Mr. Ames, the eighth grade teacher by day and a hip-hop producer by night. Read more…

Arrah and the Ferns is not the same band it was six years ago. Not even close. That is all for the better, according to frontwoman Arrah Fisher.

“We’re definitely a rock band more than we are a folk band or a cute band,” she says. “We’re not cute. We’re ballsy.” Read more…

Bob Grossman: The Fabulous (Homebrewing) Philadelphian.

January 8, 2013

BobGrossman01As part of our partnership with Philly Beer Scene magazine, we’re documenting Philly’s relationships between music and beer. For the most recent issue of Philly Beer Scene, G.W. Miller III talks to the Philadelphia Orchestra’s principal librarian, who happens to be a homebrewing champion.

Bob Grossman has been traveling with the Philadelphia Orchestra for most of the 34 years he’s been working with the Fabulous Philadelphians, as the orchestra members are known.

While touring in the United Kingdom during the late 1980s, Grossman, now the orchestra’s principal librarian, learned about a movement happening there—the Campaign for Real Ales (CAMRA). He was fascinated to see that people were standing up against the commercial beer companies that were taking over the local pubs, and they were fighting to preserve the brews and the brewing systems that had existed for centuries.

“We’re talking about fresh delivered British ales, maybe four to six weeks old, that would finish fermenting at the pub for a week or two,” Grossman recalls. “It was only good for a few days but it was full of flavors. It was live beer.”

But it was becoming a thing of the past.

Grossman, an avid cook who had been baking his own bread for years, decided to experiment with homebrewing when he returned to his home in Haddonfield, NJ after the tour. Read more…

Weekend Music Picks: It’s A New Year. Keep Partying.

January 4, 2013

It’s going to be chilly this weekend so biking around town isn’t going to be fun. But it’s been a few days since your New Years hangover dissipated. It’s time to hit the town again and there are a few really good reasons to do so.

FRIDAY

Talking Heads Discussion for CaveCast at Philadelphia Art Alliance

Host Brian Cassidy will record a podcast discussion about the work of the Talking Heads, complete with lots of the great music. The one-hour event is followed by a dance party in the 100-year old mansion that houses the Art Alliance. There’s free Naragansett beer and Spodee wine starting at 10 PM until they run out.

Many Arms with Colin Fisher at The Rotunda

Philly’s guitar hero, Nick Millevoi, and his bandmates in the jazz-punk trio Many Arms will collaborate with Colin Fisher on tenor sax. Should make for an interesting show.

SunAirway01SATURDAY

Sun Airway at Johnny Brenda’s

We profiled Jon Barthmus‘ project in the very first issue of JUMP back in 2011 (photo above by Colin Kerrigan). Sun Airway was fresh off of pitchfork fame then, and things have exploded since. The band has toured the world with the likes of M83.

Arsin Mixtape Release at Black and Nobel

West Philly rapper Arsin will drop his new mixtape, sign autographs and perform during the afternoon. Lots of Philly talent are expected to show up, including Marsha Ambrosius, Gillie Da Kid, Tone Trump, Young Savage and others.

SUNDAY

Ghostlimb, Heavy Medical and Xanax at the First Unitarian Church

Philly hardcore crew Reign Supreme was listed as the headliner for this show and they are still pimping it on the facebook page. Regardless, this will be an insane early show full of loud hardcore.

Hivelords and Sadgiqacea at Kung Fu Necktie

Philly’s doom metal band, Hivelords, will blow out your ear drums. We caught them back in August when they played KFN with Sadgiqacea and our ears still hurt.

Eric Slick at PhilaMOCA

Dr. Dog drummer Eric Slick, who also performs with Norwegian Arms, Ape School, Paper Cat, Lithuania and others (including Rich Mystics), will perform a live set as his self-produced documentary film runs behind him. This should be really interesting, and there will be a ton of local music folks in attendance. (Photo by Brandee Nichols).
