Here’s one more really awesome, free event this weekend featuring local music.
The harmonizing trio of Good Old War will headline this show at Dock Street, 5oth and Baltimore. Vacationer, featuring local boy Kenny Vasoli, will play their chillwave music that will make you wish you were sitting on the beach. Toy Soldiers will rouse the crowd with their rambunctious Americana. And David Cope will play his dreamy, eclectic pop.
This is free? Wow.
It kicks off at 6, rain or shine. Oh, and your bartenders for the evening will be the guys from Good Old War. Cool, eh?
Check out the dreamy new video from Vacationer, the new project from local guy Kenny Vasoli, former frontman from The Starting Line.
Vasoli teams up with Matthew Young and Grant Wheeler, both of the Brooklyn-based band, Body Language, for Vacationer.
The video above was shot in Hawaii using the way cool Lomo analog cameras.
Learn more about the project from our recent story about the band and hear some of their music below.
M83 @ The Electric Factory.
After a few months bouncing around Europe and hitting the festival circuit, M83, the transcendental electro group led by Frenchman Anthony Gonzales, kicked off their three-month North American tour with a sold out show last night at the Electric Factory. Check out the great images from the show by Teresa McCullough.

Every Thursday, our JUMP mag intern, Bree Wood, offers her suggestions for fun Philly music stuff for the upcoming weekend (and more).
FRIDAY
The Homophones with Instamatic, Butchers and Bakers, and Swedeland at PhilaMOCA
It’s going to be a crazy weekend, so start it off with a pretty chill night at what is quickly becoming one of JUMP’s favorite music venues. The Homophones play jangly pop music that is perfect for swaying to with a Narragansett lager in your hand.
SATURDAY
Mad Decent Block Party at Penn’s Landing
I’ve been to the Mad Decent Block Party a couple times and it’s always interesting. Pretty much a lot of day drinking and good times to be had with great acts to watch. Heading up this year’s Philly stop is Major Lazer (above). I dare you to try not to dance to this reggae fusion/hip hop/electro greatness. Also catch Riff Raff, Bonde Do Role, Po Po and a slew of DJs. This will be jam packed, for sure.
Jukebox The Ghost and Norwegian Arms at Morgan’s Pier
There have been complaints about Morgan’s Pier being a bro-bar, whatever that means, but they keep bringing great, free and local music there. Jukebox the Ghost (above) are former Philly transplants (now ugly New Yorkers) who put on an energetic show. And Norwegian Arms features our old pal Keith Birthday and Eric Slick, the drummer from Dr. Dog.
Ruby The Hatchet with Blue Roan, Automotive High School and Commonwealth Choir at Kung Fu Necktie
After shakin’ it at Mad Decent all day and/or partying at Morgan’s Pier, stop by Kung Fu Necktie, grab a beer and listen to some new jams. Commonwealth Choir and Blue Roan are new groups on the block. And it’s Ruby The Hatchet‘s Single Release Party!
SUNDAY
Man Man, The Spinning Leaves, Blayer Pointdujour and more at the 2nd Street Festival
Here’s another event that is sure to be packed – ’cause it’s free, yes, but it’s also a great lineup. And it’s carbon neutral this year, for whatever that’s worth. Man Man (above) will perform on the stage in the Piazza and they always create an amazing experience. There will be two other stages on 2nd Street with live music running from noon until 10 PM. There will be food, art, beer gardens and much more. Be sure to check out the tent by North Bowl where DJ Rob Paine and his Worship Recordings crew will host their monthly dance party, The Shakedown.
New Videos: The ReBel Yell and El Malito.
Check out the new video from The ReBel Yell (above). Enjoy the Philly scenery throughout the video, though the song actually kicks in around the 2:00 minute mark. The best part of the whole thing might be the song during the closing credits. It’s smooth with a great beat.
Also check out the new video from El Malito & the 33rd Century (below). It’s good time stuff with a social message that we’d probably appreciate more if we spoke Spanish. Regardless, it is fun, way trippy and you get to see Les in his underwear again.
Want to see Tsunami Rising (above) and Among Criminals at The Blockley on Wednesday? Email us your name at JUMPphilly@gmail.com to enter to win a pair of tickets. We’ll announce the winners at 1 PM on Wednesday. See show details here.
This is Hardcore 2012 is fast approaching. Last week, Bree Wood had an email conversation with Scott Vogel of the LA band Terror. They were on tour but they’ll play the TIHC opener on Thursday, August 9 at Union Transfer with Earth Crisis, Naysayer, Ringworm and more. See here for details.
BTW … Vogel responded in all caps, so we left it that way.
How’s tour been? Are you currently in Australia or New Zealand?
I’M IN AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND WITH ONE MORE SHOW AND WE FLY BACK TO THE USA. EVERYTHING IS GREAT MAN. AWESOME SHOWS. HC IS STRONG HERE AND IN AUSTRALIA. LIFE’S GOOD. CHECK OUT WARBRAIN, SURVIVAL AND IRON MIND. GOOD YOUNGER BANDS.
What can people expect or look forward to this year from your bands set at This is Hardcore?
IT WILL BE TERROR – OLD SONGS AND NEW. THERE REALLY ISN’T MUCH TO SAY. NOTHING HAS CHANGED AND WE DON’T HAVE ANY GIMMICK. WE’RE NOT GOING TO PLAY “LOWEST OF THE LOW” FROM START TO FINISH. HA HA HA. IT WILL JUST BE A GOOD POSITIVE SET FROM A BAND THAT IS STILL ON THE FRONTLINES OF THE SCENE EVERYDAY.
People love collecting merch at TIHC. Anything new to expect?
WE’LL HAVE THE KEEPERS OF THE FAITH LP ON VINYL. THAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE’LL HAVE.
Tell us about the CD/DVD No Regrets, No Shame, which came out in April. Can people get it at TIHC?
WE SHOULD HAVE THAT ON VINYL TOO. IT CAME OUT REALLY COOL. BIG UPS TO B9 FOR PUTTING IT OUT: OLD TERROR- RAW TERROR- FUN TERROR. IT WAS COOL WORKING WITH IAN FROM BLOOD FOR BLOOD. IT WAS COOL TO REMEMBER THOSE SONGS AND THAT TIME WHEN EVERY DAY WAS A NEW EXPERIENCE.
Any plans for a new album release?
EARLY 2013. LIVE BY THE CODE. IT’S RECORDED AND WE ARE FUCKING HYPED. IT FEELS GREAT TO HAVE A NEW RECORD ON ICE READY TO EXPLODE.
What’s your favorite spot in Philly to visit? Food, someone’s house, park, etc.?
I LIKE IT WHEN JOE HC AND ME GET SOME TIME TO TALK CORE. IF RICHIE KRUTCH IS THERE THAT’S GREAT TOO. I SAW A FLYERS GAME. THAT WAS COOL. I SAW ALLEN IVERSON IN THE MALL ONCE. MY FRIEND JENELLE USED TOO LIVE THERE. SHE’S COOL. WE GET DRUNK AND PUNCH EACH OTHER.
When was your first TIHC?
MAN, I WANNA SAY WE DEF PLAYED THE FIRST YEAR. WE HAD TO HAVE, RIGHT? BUT MY MEMORY IS SO BAD. I CAN TELL YOU LAST YEAR I HATED THE SUNDAY SHOW WALK FROM THE HOTEL TO THE CLUB. IT WAS RAINING AND I WAS LIKE I’M NOT GETTING A CAB. IT’S A 5 MIN WALK. THEN MOTHER NATURE TURNED THE RAIN UP AND BY THE TIME I GOT TO THE VENUE I WAS SOAKED BIG TIME. NOT FUN!!!!!!!!
Do you have a favorite TIHC moment?
YES. THREE YEARS AGO, SEEING WISDOM IN CHAINS PLAY “LAND OF THE KINGS” WITH LIKE 500 KIDS SINGING ALONG. GAVE ME CHILLS FOR MINUTES STRAIGHT. I LOVE HC. CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY THE REACH THE SKY’S SET LAST YEAR. THAT WAS SO FUCKING FUN. SO MANY OF MY OLD FRIENDS SMILING AND RECONNECTING THROUGH A BAND I SET UP EVERY WEEKEND WITH IN THE LATE 90S AND EVERY SHITTY CLUB IN THE USA.
What are you looking forward to this year at TIHC?
WE PLAY THURSDAY AND GET ON A PLANE TO EUROPE FRIDAY AND START A TOUR THERE. FUCKING LAME.
What’s your role in the hardcore scene back home?
I’M IN TERROR. I HAVE A PROJECT BAND CALLED S.O.S.. I DO A FANZINE CALLED BORN TO EXPIRE. I GO TO SHOWS AND SUPPORT THEM ALL THE TIME. MY ROOMMATE PATRICK DOES REAPER RECORDS AND HAS HALO SCEENPRINTING, SO ITS PRETTY MUCH HC 24/7. WITH MOVIES AND GOOD MEALS IN BETWEEN.
Anything else you want people to know?
WARZONE. “DON’T FORGET THE STRUGGLE:”
It’s been a few years now. We’re going strong We’ve been through a lot of good and bad. Some gave up. They had no heart. For you and me, this world won’t tear us apart. From the East Coast to the West Coast. Inside myself. I can hear the screams. The style – all over It may be different – but in our hearts, it’s all the same Don’t forget the struggle. Don’t forget the streets. Don’t forget your roots. And don’t sell out! What the fuck has happened to you? You think you’re a rock star? You’re trapped inside a cage. You’re ego trip has brainwashed you. You forgot the past. Now your future won’t last. It won’t last. Street kids had your back right from the start. Played your music day and night. For what you stood for, they would even fight. Now your eyes have turned fire red to money green. They’ve turned fire red to money green. Never give in to any of their fuckin’ shit.
Once again Scott, thanks for taking the time to do the interview. See you at TIHC.
IN THE PIT I HOPE.
Every week, JUMP intern Maddy Court scours the blogosphere for musical rumblings and other fun stuff. Enjoy!
Columbian band Bomba Estéreo played at World Cafe Live on Friday night. Our friends El Malito and the 33rd Century headlined in matching plaid shirts and pink pants (as seen above in images by Mike Dennis).
Bomba Estéreo has a huge international following (though El Malito has an intergalactic following, which is cooler) and keeps a photoblog of all their world travels.
Sigur Ros performed the first part of a two day run at the Mann Center last night. It was the Icelandic band’s first live performance in four years, so fans were at the ready with cameras and recording equipment.
I personally loved this brief recap by Tumblr user @satellitefive, but Philly.com also ran a pretty judicious review on the show.
Summer 2012 will be remembered as the one where a minimum of 50 “Call Me Maybe” parodies were uploaded to YouTube every day. This one by Philly realtor Liz Lutz is pretty endearing because a). it features shots of Passyunk Avenue and the art museum and b). she seems so earnest about selling houses.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Don’t watch the video. It will make you want to jump out a window. Just saying …
Finally, WXPN’s The Key asked Strand of Oaks‘ frontman, Tim Showalter, to curate a Spotify playlist. It’s moody and dark, the perfect soundtrack for the end of the summer.

The Quelle Source was among the three bands to perform at PhilaMOCA Friday night to celebrate the official launch of Collaborate Philly, a social networking site for the Philly creative and media community. The website, intended to bridge the gap between the various arts niches within the city, was started by Sam Watson (right), who was joined on stage by collaborator Lindsay Colferai.
Eat Your Birthday Cake and The Chairman Dances also performed before a good size crowd.
Local artists displayed work around the walls of the intimate hall on 12th Street near Spring Garden. The venue was a former showroom for tombstones and mausoleums, and more recently was the home of Mad Decent.

Intern Bree’s Weekend Picks (And More!): So Many Philly Bands, You Won’t Care How Hot It Is.
Every Thursday, our JUMP mag intern, Bree Wood, offers her suggestions for fun Philly music stuff for the upcoming weekend (and more).
FRIDAY
Toy Soldiers and Thom McCarthy at FDR Park
Sure, it’s going to be crazy hot but the music of Toy Soldiers is made for sultry nights. This is a free event and you can bring your own food, drinks, dogs, whatever. This is the second event of the FDR Park summer series, curated by the talented Danielle Alderman.
SATURDAY
Of Monsters and Men at The Radio 104.5 Block Party at The Piazza at Schmidt’s
Pissed Jeans, A place to Bury Strangers and Gang at Morgan’s Pier
Two free shows! First up is Of Monsters and Men. It is part of the Radio 104.5 Block Party series. Of Monsters and Men are a folk/indie pop band from Iceland. It’s a free, for-all-ages show so don’t miss it!
The second free show is at Morgan’s Pier. Pissed Jeans is a hardcore/punk/noise band from Allentown. Side note: I had a sub come in for my writing class and he was the dad of one of the band members. It’s weird but cool meeting people’s parents, and then seeing the kids play in a band. These guys are loud, aggressive and full of attitude. And Gang? Love them.
SUNDAY
Kill Verona, Part Filth, Creepoid and Good Graces at The Barbary
Kill Verona is a Philly band from the earlier 2000s, and they will be reuniting this Sunday. They are a hardcore/pop punk band that also used to go by the name Little League. So, if you are feeling nostalgic and want to meet up with your younger self, you will thoroughly enjoy your night.
THURSDAY
Instamatic, Hot Guts, Future Blondes, Little Debbie and Night Sins at Underground Arts
Three Philly bands and two touring bands are filling out this lineup. The majority of the lineup is in the electronic and snyth genre, with a hint of Goth, creating a chilling sound. If you haven’t heard these Philly bands check them out.
