Jukebox the Ghost @ Union Transfer Saturday.

December 2, 2011

Damn, Saturday is a great night to see local music! Toy Soldiers will be at Kung Fu Necktie, East Hundred and Turning violet Violet will play Milkboy Philly and Jukebox the Ghost will headline Union Transfer.

We saw Jukebox the Ghost in September at the Philly FM Fest (right) and they put on an awesome show.

East Hundred, Turning violet Violet and Val De Val @ Milkboy Saturday.

December 1, 2011

Here’s another option for local music this Saturday: East Hundred (above) is performing at Milkboy Philly with Turning violet Violet (below) and Val De Val.

Y-Not Radio is presenting the show, details of which can be found here.

J. Roddy Walston and the Business (with Toy Soldiers & Brad Hinton) @ Kung Fu Necktie on Saturday.

November 30, 2011

If you haven’t seen Toy Soldiers live, well, you should. And if you’ve seen them before, go see them again. They are talented and entertaining and they will make you dance.

But if you really need an excuse to see them, here it is: they will play on a good-old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll lineup this Saturday at the intimate Kung Fu Necktie with Baltimore’s J. Roddy Walston and the Business, and local guy Brad Hinton. It should be a raucous show. Details are here.

If you can’t catch this show, Toy Soldiers will also play on Saturday, December 10 at Milkboy Philly. Details are here.

AWOLNATION @ Union Transfer.

November 29, 2011

Text and images by Caroline Newton.

The rising star of Red Bull Records, AWOLNATION, brought the party to Union Transfer last week on Thanksgiving Eve.

The band opened with the song “Megalithic Symphony,” a heavy instrumental track that built up to the entrance of AWOLNATION’s front man, Aaron Bruno. They seamlessly transitioned into the second, upbeat track of the night, “People.” The crowd bounced all night long, throwing their hands in the air as electro-pop beats flowed from the speakers.

Check out the new video from Work Drugs, featuring scenes from around the city (including the Occupy Philly grounds at Dilworth Plaza). The track is the third single off the band’s debut album, Aurora Lies, which dropped last month.

Work Drugs will perform on Friday at Haverford College with Parts & Labor.

GWAR @ The Electric Factory.

November 28, 2011

Text and images by Jimmy Viola.

“Fuck you death, you’re an asshole,” bellowed Gwar frontman Oderus Urungus, and with that, swung a broad sword with both hands at the head of a stage hand dressed as the grim reaper, severing the costume’s head to reveal a prosthetic stump that hosed the audience with a jet of bright red blood as they roared with ravenous delight.

After 27 years, the costumed shock-rockers have perfected their explosive style of crude humor and gore-drenched theatrics, and their performance on Saturday night at the Electric Factory exemplified the sights and sounds that the band has become notorious.

The only missing piece was guitarist Corey Smoot, who was found dead on the band’s tour bus on November 3 during their tour of North America. Smoot had performed as the dreadlocked and triceratops shoulder pad-wearing alien Flattus Maximus since 2003. Following his untimely death, Urungus, known as Dave Brockie out of costume, says the band chose to continue their tour to honor Smoot’s memory and cope with his sudden passing among fans. So kicking off the show by summarily slaughtering the visage of death reminded audiences that the show must go on. Read more…
