Eleven Things You Need To Do This Week!
It’s a busy week, capped off by the always tremendous This is Hardcore Fest, brought to you by Philly’s own Joe Hardcore (above, in his role as medieval ass-kicker). We’ve put your game plan together right here with a wide-variety of shows – many of which are free (or wicked cheap), almost all of which feature Philly talent.
TUESDAY
Kam Kama and The Box Tiger @ Kung Fu Necktie
We’re suckers for $8 shows and music described as “angular.” Kam Kama sounds like the great post-punk bands of the early 2000’s (which makes them what, third-wave post-punk?). The Box Tiger plays intense power pop that will sound amazing in the intimate confines of KFN.
Dice Raw @ City Hall Courtyard
The Roots collaborator will play a free, early outdoor show. If you haven’t been to an event in City Hall’s Courtyard, this is your chance to catch a fun one. We saw Dice a few weeks back on the Race Street Pier and he puts on a passionate performance.
Little Big League @ Gold Star Park
For real, these guys are going to be huge. They just released their debut album. And they’re playing this free outdoor show at 7th and Wharton. You need to be there.
Amanda X, Demonstrative Girls, Manors and Shape Breaker @ Kung Fu Necktie
Your favorite all-girl Philly punk band will headline an all-local night of loud, female-dominated bands.
Bell Biv DeVoe and Dru Hill @ The Dell
Not sure why this show is so pricey but it’s nearly sold out already. There are $30 tix left. The Dell is a beautiful venue and BBD coined possibly the greatest romantic caveat of all time (“Never trust a big butt and a smile.”).
FRIDAY
Commonwealth Choir @ Ortlieb’s
We’ve partied with the guys from Commonwealth Choir. You should, too. It’s a$5 show and you will be able to reach out and grab the band as they play. Plus the super-awesome Former Belle and Air is Human will also perform.
Cold Fronts, Desoto Jones and Satellite Hearts @ the Hard Rock Cafe
Three great Philly rock acts, in a venue that has recently been hosting a bunch of great Philly acts. And it’s a $7 show. Dang.
West Philadelphia Orchestra @ Underground Arts
Big brass in a dark basement venue? This will be good fun. You won’t be able to not dance.
SATURDAY
Bad Rabbits with Astronauts Really Fly @ Union Transfer
Bad Rabbits takes the world of music, finds amazing elements from all over and blends them into infectious sounds. Southwest Philly’s Astronauts Really Fly does something similar – they take real world stuff and rap about it, with the backing of a live band with punk influences.
This dude warps his guitar to create mind-bending music. He’ll be celebrating the release of his new album, so this should be a great performance.
This is Hardcore Fest @ The Electric Factory
TIHC is the annual celebration of all things loud and aggressive. There are too many great acts to mention here. Visit the official website here to see days and times, plus the full listing of after-party events.
