The city of Philadelphia’s latest hot and juicy serving of metal came in the form of an eight-hour-long, brutality-packed, ten-band show this past Sunday – the Summer Slaughter Tour.
In comparison to 2013’s highly criticized lineup, this year’s installment catered particularly to even the most stubborn of the death metal purists. The month-long road show hosted a deep lineup consisting of death metal greats. The acts ranged from the legendary Morbid Angel (above) and the ceaselessly-brutal Dying Fetus to the respectably known bands like Decrepit Birth, The Faceless, Origin and Goatwhore to even the lesser known bands like Within The Ruins, Boreworm and Thy Art Is Murder.
Throughout the course of a beautiful and sunny Sunday afternoon, the Trocadero Theater found itself enduring quite the opposite. The legions of metalheads in attendance at the Trocadero may have differed slightly in musical preference but they congregated indoors on a beautiful and sunny afternoon in reverence of a common love for death metal.
Bearing their devotion to the genre, fans sought refuge within the Troc’s many nooks and crannies, crowding around the front of the stage, sitting cross-legged and eating pizza in-between sets, leaning over the balcony to sing along and cycling in and out of the mosh pit for their respective favorite bands. The result was a dense, sweaty and pleasantly overwhelming atmosphere that complemented the raucous lineup.
Two nights later, the 2014 Summer Slaughter Tour ended its United States leg in Springfield, VA. The tour begins its conquest of Canada tonight.
