Thanks to the nearly 500 people who came out to see RJD2 at Underground Arts on Saturday as part of the Red Bull Sound Select, an event that was curated by JUMP.
We started the evening with MATTHEW LAW (aka DJ PHSH) who set the tone by getting the early arrivals dancing.
Shortly after 9 PM, Steve Davit’s saxophone bellowed and everyone gathered around the stage to hear the sultry-yet-danceable sounds from Marian Hill. They opened with their hit “One Time,” which was sampled by our next opener.
Sugar Tongue Slim followed with a rousing set, starting with “Make Some Noise.” DJ Bear One and Slim blasted through tracks from their albums, Gold Rush and Gold Rush II. RJD2, who is working with Slim on his upcoming album, jumped on stage and added vocals and other sounds to perform some of the new material.
Afterward, RJD2 returned for his set in a blue jumpsuit and welder’s mask and the crowd was hyped up. He sang, played guitar, spun records and made magical sounds with a variety of instruments. Slim joined him on stage for a few more tracks and the night ended with RJD2 and MATTHEW LAW both on the turntables.
