Cheerleader: A Reason to Cheer – Hazy Electro Pop

July 16, 2014

The members of the band Cheerleader haven’t been doing this long. Two started making music just a couple years ago, and other members have only been with the band for mere months.

But just observing them interact for a few minutes makes it seem they’ve been doing this forever. They finish each other’s sentences. They grab each other’s french fries. They lob inside jokes at one another.

“We didn’t know each other and now we’re sharing beds,” jokes bassist Paul Impellizeri.

CheerleaderOnPage02Cheerleader formed in Connecticut with longtime friends, singer Joe Haller and guitarist Chris Duran, but they moved to Philadelphia to gain greater exposure. That’s when they added Impellizeri, guitarist/keyboard player Josh Pannepacker and drummer Carl Bahner. Read more…

Brand New, Man Man and Dinosaur Pile-Up @ The Mann.

The Mann Center for the Performing Arts housed a sold out show on Saturday for cult favorite Brand New.

Openers Dinosaur Pile-Up started the show with some dance-worthy tunes while simultaneously playing what you would have listened to alone in your bedroom at age 14. They kept on-stage banter to a minimum, except for lead singer Matt Bigland’s thank-you to the headliners, “I don’t’ like talking during shows because I’m fucking awkward but I just want to say thanks for taking us on tour. Thanks Brand New!”

Philadelphia’s own Man Man then took the stage in a flurry of noise.

“What the fuck is that?” asked a concertgoer who apparently had not heard of the experimental group consisting of Honus Honus, Pow Pow, Shono and Brown Sugar.

West Philadelphia Orchestra

It’s hard not to party when the West Philadelphia Orchestra kicks its way through two straight sets.

Last Thursday night, Underground Arts hosted a Balkan Dance Party with Philly’s pied pipers of Eastern European jazz. In the shadowy glow of UA’s colorful lights, the brassy booms of the Orchestra bumped and bounced off of the concrete walls. There was standing room only and no one stood still.

The Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of The Moon Mash-up @ Clark Park.

July 14, 2014

From the bottom of a crater-like ravine in West Philly’s Clark Park, speakers boomed last Thursday night. The sound bounced off the hills, the trees and all of the lawn chairs in between to carry a few back-to-back Rolling Stones tunes down Baltimore Avenue as a crowd began to form.

Classic rock radio sponsor 102.9 WMGK was responsible for supplying the tunes from “The Bowl” area of the park and bringing in interested onlookers. The radio station gave out prizes and created atmosphere for the Awesome Fest, which brought the night’s headlining show under the stars.

On the bill for the free outdoor screening was the 1939 film classic The Wizard of Oz synched with Pink Floyd’s 1973 Dark Side of the Moon album. In celebration of the film’s 75th anniversary and the incredible amount of synchronization between the two, Awesome Fest projected the pairing on an inflatable 30-foot screen and left the invite open.

The Metro Goldwyn Mayer lion roared twice and after the next outcry, the album began with the slow heartbeat of “Speak to Me.” About 1,000 children, adults and dogs gathered in the park to watch the film, which flashed subtitles for this showing and allowed the music to carry the night. There were moments when the songs seemed as if they were written specifically for the movie.

The Dolphin: Old Charm & New Sounds.

Upon entering The Dolphin Tavern, the 1960s nostalgia smacks you in the face. When Dave P, Sean Agnew and their partners at Four Corners Management scooped up the vacant venue, they made sure to stay true to its classic charm.

“One of the things that attracted us was how amazing of a space it was,” says Dave P. “The history isn’t just in the actual history of the space but in the architecture of the space, the design  of the space. It’s all been there forever. Nothing has been changed in so long.”

Kitten @ District N9NE with Kitty.

July 11, 2014

After what seemed like an unnecessarily long wait, Kitten took the stage at District N9NE (the former Starlight Ballroom) like pros. Edgy and practiced, something about their performance had them rise above your typical glam punk and indie rock show.

Frontlady, Chloe Chaidez, had the intensity of a two-year-old’s temper tantrum as she continuously spun around the stage like a planet. The other members practically orbited around her energy, though stayed to their respective corners. She paid them each attention – as much as she was giving to the audience, which stared upward, stunned by her relentless dancing.

Strand of Oaks: Spring Awakening.

July 10, 2014

Tim Showalter would like to apologize to the people of Sweden. As Strand of Oaks‘ European tour drew to a close last September, Showalter, well, lost it a little bit while on stage.

“I put on a good concert, but I think I cried. I think I was just like…,” he says, trailing off while talking from his Mt. Airy apartment. “They were probably thinking, ‘This American already looks scary enough and now he’s kicking his pedal board and hitting the cymbals with his fists.’ It wasn’t a breakdown. Actually, It might have been a breakdown. Yeah, I guess that would be a good way to put it.”

Last month, 32-year-old Showalter released his fourth album as Strand of Oaks. Appropriately enough, it’s titled HEAL.

“I had been gone for two years of touring straight,” he says. “I got back home in September, and it’s been the longest I’ve ever been home since I lived here.”
