Maggi “Magglez” Nagel Drops Her Debut Mixtape “Ta!k Back.”
Maggi “Magglez” Nagel is a local up-and-coming DJ who loves spinning upbeat pop and hip-hop. Feeding off the energy of her crowds, Magglez spins at Drinkers Tavern in Old City every Friday and hosts her own party called “Blank Stare” every Sunday at Ortlieb’s in Northern Liberties. She’s working with Regina GUN$ Garcia and dropping her debut mixtape (see below). She spoke with our Derrick Krom.
Where are you from in Philadelphia and what do you love about the city?
I’m actually originally from South Jersey, a really small town in Cape May County. I originally moved up here for art school and I just loved the whole vibe of the city, especially being from a small town. There’s so much energy and so much more to do.
How did you first get into DJing?
Well, I was working at a bar in Center City and a couple of my coworkers just kind of suggested it, knowing that I go out all the time. They were just kind of like, “Oh yeah, you’d probably be a good DJ. You love to go out, you love to dance.” It just kind of planted a seed in my head and then I just started doing it. One of my coworkers taught me the basics until I met Regina “GUN$” Garcia and then she showed me more of all the technical stuff.
Regina “GUN$” Garcia has kind of been your mentor, right?
Yeah, for sure.
How has she helped you become a better DJ?
Well, she’s basically taught me pretty much everything I know—how to mix songs together, how to work the turntables, how to hook everything up. She’s been a big help and I have a lot of respect for her. She’s really good at that. One of her passions in life is to just teach young women or females in general how to DJ.
The Sword @ Underground Arts.

The Sword show at Underground Arts was, in a word, packed.
The best way to describe being in the audience was sardine-like. I honestly haven’t been to a show this crowded since clandestine punk shows of high school, but in the end it was worth it because the show was awesome.

The first Sofar Sounds show of 2014 was fantastic, as they always are. A huge crowd packed the first floor of Kevin Kennedy‘s South Kensington home, sitting on the floor in utter silence to listen and watch the amazing performances.
Kevin Killen @ The Rozz-Tox.

When music maker and Philly native Kevin Killen isn’t producing albums for indie PA acts such as Tin Bird Choir and Psalmships, he wears the rusty mantle of a singer-songwriter. Killen has spent the last week on the road, visiting friends and playing a few shows along the way. During his stop yesterday in Rock Island, IL, he recorded a Daytrotter session and later played an intimate set to the few souls who braved the Midwestern weather to catch him at The Rozz-Tox.
“You guys have a new kind of cold here,” said Killen while tuning his guitar.
His brand of music is a mix of somber odes to heart-ache and livelier exercises in Americana. Before playing “I Ran Away,” he made sure to mention that, “I wrote this song is for a girl named Ali Wadsworth … she asked people to write tunes for her and she put them on a record.”
Having released the self-produced EP, Laurelwood Road, in July of 2013, Killen is working on a full length album set to drop April of this year.
Opening the show was Rock Island native Ren.

Yuck and Alvvays @ Johnny Brenda’s.

Yuck kicked off their one-month North American tour last night with a jam-packed show at Johnny Brenda’s.
“Do you like our banner?” asked guitarist/singer Max Bloom, referring to the giant album cover art that hung behind the band. “I spent five hours last night ironing it.”
UK-based Yuck was formed in 2009 by Bloom and Daniel Blumberg, who had both previously been part of London buzz band Cajun Dance Party. They added a female bassist from Japan, Mariko Doi, and drummer Jonny Rogoff, a New Jersey native with a Questlove-type afro.
Blumberg left the band last spring but even without him, the band sounded fantastic. They played tracks off both of their albums, including “Out of Time” and “Get Away,” plus a cover of New Order’s “Age of Consent” and a brand new song.
St. Lucia @ World Cafe Live.

Jean-Philip Grobler appeared from a side of the dimly lit stage dressed in a diamond printed button-up and said, “I am St. Lucia.”
Shortly after, the other band members of the project Grobler created in 2010 assumed their positions on keyboard, guitar, drums and synthesizer. The lights fell on to the faces of the smiling musicians as Grobler grabbed his guitar and began the first song of the first stop on the “When The Night Tour” at World Cáfe Live.
Amanda Shires @ Milkboy.
Text and images by Kyle Bagenstose.
Amanda Shires is like your aunt at the holiday party.
No, not the weird older one who waddles up to you with bulging eyes and asks if you’re still dating that person you broke up with eight years ago.
No, she’s the other one: the cool young one who hasn’t been at a holiday party for seven years because she’s been off having adventures and riding motorcycles around the country. The one who sips healthily from a wine glass the entire night and occasionally looks over to you, with a smirk that says, “Somehow, we’re the normal ones.”
Indeed Shires, a country singer-songwriter from Lubbock, Tx., had two companions on stage at Milkboy on Thursday night. The first, Stephanie Dickinson, provided plenty of musical pop from her upright bass to back Shires’ guitar strumming and fiddle plucking throughout the night. But it was the bottle of Gnarly Head wine on the table behind them that provided much of the extra entertainment.
