Mother Falcon @ World Cafe Live.

Mother Falcon played the upstairs at World Café Live on Wednesday night to largely diverse crowd. It was the first stop on their tour across the Northeast and they drove in from their home, Austin, Texas.
Matt Puckett, a saxophonist who did most of the groups talking, said that they were touring with 16 musicians (there were 15 on stage) and 23 total instruments. The tour van “looks like an episode of hoarders,” chimed in one of the collective.
A Fistful of Sugar @ World Cafe Live on Friday.
Local folk/bluegrass outfit A Fistful of Sugar will celebrate the release of their debut album, Perspicacity, on Friday at World Cafe Live. The brass-forward, Eastern European-flavored West Philadelphia Orchestra will share a bill with them that night, along with Aaron and the Spell and Black Horse Motel.
AFOS has a modern vibe built on a melting pot of traditional genres. Each of the six member’s individual musical background and stylistic know-how permeates the group’s multifaceted sound. Old school jazz, gypsy swing, blues and traditional folk can be heard throughout their new eleven song collection, the lyrical poetry running contrast to playfulness in this harmony-rich sextet.

Our Favorite Photos From 2013.
This is a totally lazy post but hey, who wants to do any work between Christmas and New Year’s Eve?
Not us, that’s for sure (actually, we’re a few days away from sending the winter issue to the printer, so we are working our asses off).
But take a look at what we covered this year – a wide array of musical genres, all around the city. There was a lot of awesomeness and we documented a lot of it.
Happy New Year. Hope 2014 is even better than 2013. Read more…
Ganou @ The Art Sanctuary.
Text by Lissa Alicia. Images by Luong Huynh.
Sometime after the advertised start time of her album release show, Ganou shuffled around barefoot, arranging and rearranging production equipment on a makeshift stage that was put together only a few minutes prior. Once settled, the French-born songstress played a few of her ambient beats to a crowd of about fifty-something at the Art Sanctuary on the corner of 16th and Bainbridge streets.
Fifteen minutes later, Ganou interrupted the banter of the crowd with an apology for the late start and offered a large, toothy grin that was more luminous than the stringed holiday lights that lined the molding of the gallery.

From mid-afternoon until midnight, Kung Fu Necktie was filled with fans for every genre last Saturday. New Legacy Enterprises held their second annual holiday showcase and brought the party to the people. From rock to rap and electronica-filled sets, act after act jumped on stage and pumped up the little venue underneath the El.
Five Amazing Music Experiences of 2013.
It’s a pretty amazing job that we have here at JUMP. We go out and experience stuff and then tell you about it.
During this past year, I was fortunate enough to sit down with jazz guitar legend Pat Martino and discuss the zen of reality. It was probably the most amazing conversation I’ve been involved in – the man sees connections in everything, from music and art to people and places. I had many beers with Dom Angelella of DRGN King one night and then he started rapping. I watched Toy Soldiers do a pop up show in their new studio, Meth Beach, which was the former home of Dr. Dog. I saw Birdie Busch perform at a Tuesday Tune-Out event at PhilaMOCA in January. The silence between her songs was simply stunning. She mesmerized the crowd with her delicate voice and unusual instruments.
Sometimes, we don’t do the events justice in words and still images – it’s hard to bring to life events like the Kickback series, which provides stage time and a huge audience for rising young hip-hop artists. But we try.
Anyway, here are five amazing things I experienced this year.

DJ George Fitzgerald @ The Dolphin.
Text and images by Jumah Chaguan.
Tecate beer cans were trampled underneath dancing feet. Women in glow-in-the-dark skeleton suits undulated on tables while DJ George Fitzgerald played house music in the booth.
Fitzgerald, a London-based DJ and producer, played at the Dolphin Tavern Friday night. This was his second to last American gig before returning to Europe. According to his Facebook page, his visit to America’s club scene was his first “proper” US tour. Fitzgerald’s DJ sets were heard across the country, from Miami to San Francisco and from Los Angeles to the birthplace of house music, Chicago.
