Home Cooking With Jakk Frost: Beards in The Kitchen.

A rowhouse nestled on a small block in West Philadelphia may look nondescript but it is the home of Philly rapper Jakk Frost. Blending in less than the house is Frost’s SUV, or his 6-foot-3 frame and 300 pound physique as he lifts bags of ShopRite groceries from the back seat. Entering his home, the alarm system sounds and as the door closes, it is hard not to notice the five (yes, five) locks and the brace for a 2 by 4. There are enough fresh pairs of Nike sneakers at your feet that you feel like you may have to climb over a small mountain to get further inside. After taking off your own sneakers, of course.
Frost is known for many things. His rapping (creating anthems like “Philly Love”), his friends and associates (such as Freeway), his grooming preferences (Beards are in the building!) and forever repping the city that he was born in and loves.
What is lesser known is that Frost is a beast in the kitchen and has developed quite the palette. Over the years he has prepared meals for the likes of Philly rap vets Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Peedi Crakk and Malik B, as well as Brooklyn Boot Camp Clikkers Sean Price, Tek and Steele for his “Frost CookTV” series on YouTube.

Biz Markie and White Cheddar Boys @ The PNB Penthouse.
Text by Jumah Chaguan. Images by Menglong Liang.
It’s true. Sometimes, we are part of a scene. And if we are willing to play the game, we can get access to any place. In this case the place was a party held on the 25th floor of the PNB building’s penthouse, right across from City Hall. The White Cheddar Boys were to be the opening act for legendary rapper Biz Markie.
The Friday event was orchestrated by advertising cowboys known as Red Tettemer O’Connell + Partners, an example of Generation X and Y who had made it Mad Men big but instead of being called “Draper,” were known as “Red” and “McCools.”
New Music Friday: Khari Mateen, Cody Kahmar and Kwesi K.
There were a few notable releases this week. Take a listen and go buy this stuff! Support your Philly talent!
Khari Mateen, who has collaborated with everyone doing big stuff in Philly including our summer issue cover artist, Sugar Tongue Slim, dropped his latest project, Qualia.
Cody Kahmar released this track, which was produced by Pro Jay, who has worked with Usher, Lil Wayne, Robin Thicke, Tupac, Jennifer Hudson and more.
Kwesi K released his four song EP, Pronouns. He’s an interesting story – born in Alaska, raised in Ohio, came to Pennsylvania to play college football, traveled to Spain where he did some busking and then moved to Philly where he dropped his debut EP last year.
Polica @ Union Transfer (Again).

Beautiful waves of music. That’s what filled the space when the Minneapolis-based synthpop outfit Polica hit the stage at Union Transfer on Tuesday night.
The band’s acoustic signature is the echoing, floating, auto-tuned vocals of lead singer Channy Leaneagh. And although the synthetic technique is often used to cover an artist’s vocal imperfections, it instead works perfectly for Polica’s sound. From the moment the band took the blue-lit stage (with a simple “Hello Philly” from Leaneagh), until the last lyric of the night, the singer’s vocals drifted out over the space and captivated the audience.
The Fratellis and The Ceremonies @ World Cafe Live.

Moments after the doors opened at World Cafe Live on Monday, the house was filled with ‘tweens, teens, college kids and a few others looking to get their fix of British indie rock. The opener, The Ceremonies, fronted by three brothers, played a short set as they looked out over a pocket of devoted, young, female fans. With tambourines, electric guitars, silver earrings and leather jackets, the band fit the bill for garage rock roots.

Overkill and Kreator @ The Troc.

A sea of people dressed in black formed a line outside the Trocadero as the sun was setting on Halloween night. They were waiting for the second night of the Legends of Thrash Tour 2013 which is co-headlined by Overkill and Kreator, a pair of ’80s metal legends.
