The Dismemberment Plan @ Union Transfer.

November 5, 2013

It’s been more than 20 years since The Dismemberment Plan formed in Washington D.C. and nearly a decade since they first broke up. After their mid-October release of Uncanney Valley, the D-Plan have embarked on their first tour in support of new jams since 2001.

Union Transfer welcomed the D.C. art-punk stalwarts back to Philadelphia on Sunday night, their first show in the city since their post-reformation performance at the Roots Picnic, six months after playing during the blizzard of 2011 at the Starlight Ballroom.

Despite the years that have passed with and without their presence, the band returned to form to a nostalgic crowd anxious to hear jams of new and old.

Starting with the delightfully funky final track off of Uncanney Valley, titled “Let’s Just Go To the Dogs Tonight,” singer/guitarists Travis Morrison invited the crowd to join in song, “When I say cluster, you say fuck.”

Jessie Ware @ The TLA.

I couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend a Friday evening than at the Theater of the Living Arts with Denitia and Sene and Mikky Ekko opening for the lively and lovely Jessie Ware.

The venue filled slowly, such that when Brooklyn based Denitia and Sene started the night, it felt like they were a cool gem secretly performing for a small group of people who were lucky enough to have decided to arrive on time.

Mikkey Ekko then took over the stage to enthusiastic cheers (especially from the ladies) and captivated the audience with an emotionally intense performance. Ekko closed with the anticipated rendition of “Stay,” which he described as “a song [he] wrote for a beautiful girl named Rihanna.”

Animal Collective @ Union Transfer.

On Monday, Animal Collective hypnotized a sold out crowd at the Union Transfer for the second night in a row.

At most shows, head bobbing is the closest audiences come to dancing. However, almost every person in the club Monday – including UT employees – danced, utilizing every limb like they were alone in their bedroom throughout the whole show.

Kreator and Overkill @ The Troc on Halloween!

October 29, 2013

Kreator2012smallText by Chad Sims.

Looking for something to do on Halloween night? Why not check out some terrifying thrash metal at The Troc?

German thrash legends Kreator (right) will be playing with Jersey’s own Overkill. These two bands have been shredding since the early 80s and this will be a can’t miss show for fans of the genre.

Kreator is touring in support of both their 13th studio album Phantom Antichrist and their live DVD/album Dying Alive.

Old Bridge Township’s Overkill is one of the longest running thrash bands in existence (formed all the way back in 1980!). Despite their long career, the band shows no signs of slowing releasing their 16th studio album, The Electric Age, last year.

Come out and see these thrash ghouls. See here for ticket info.

Johnny Showcase and The Lefty Lucy Cabaret: Totally Groovy Fun.

You take a chance any time you receive a call to meet up with South Philly theater performer and musician David Sweeny.

Sometimes you’ll find a sweet, funny and expressive 33-year-old. But on days like today, you’ll find a crude crooner clad in red flared pants, an orange brocade jacket and a button-up vest exposing a large gold medallion around his neck and tufts of chest hair.

Today, Sweeny is his stage persona, Johnny Showcase. Joined by his Lefty Lucy Cabaret, the band has been weaving their wild soul music with gaudy theatrical live performances since 2007.
