Intern Derrick’s Weekend Picks: Celebrate Local, And Grab Some Beer.

February 25, 2014

RILY_NSB_DarraghDandurand_02DerrickKromAlright Philly, let me get all deep and introspective on you for a second. There’s something truly special about a group of otherwise random people getting together and making music, don’t you think? The fact that musicians can get together and make anything and everything from beautiful sonic soundscapes to straight ahead eardrum-shattering noise rock is a pretty amazing thing. On top of all that, we live in a city that is filled to the brim with excellent groups of musicians doing just that. So, go out this weekend and experience and support some of the best local bands and artists Philly has to offer. Oh, there will be beer too. Beer is good. – Derrick Krom

Revolution, I Love You, Dockument and The One2s at North Star Bar

Start your weekend off right by celebrating the release of lo-fi rock/pop duo Revolution, I Love You’s newest EP The Atlantic Ocean. Revolution, I Love You (above) will be joined by fellow Philly electro pop-rockers Dockument and local rock band The One2s. It’s bound to be a unique and genre-bending night.

The Rivals, The Levee Drivers and Crushed Out at Ortlieb’s

It’s going be a dirty, rock ‘n’ roll-filled night at Ortlieb’s this Friday when Philly outfit The Rivals come out from the underground to tear through a set of brooding blues-rock numbers. Country rockers Levee Drivers and Brooklyn garage rock duo Crushed Out will round out the bill.

Shaking Through Season 5 Launch & Weathervane Music Benefit featuring The So So Glos, Lushlife and Torres at Johnny Brenda’s

The Shaking Through documentary series will be launching its fifth season at Johnny Brenda’s this Saturday night to benefit Weathervane Music, the local non-profit independent music organization that produces the series. Brooklyn punk rock band The So So Glos, Philly hip-hop artist Lushlife and critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Torres will be performing.

Touché Amoré, mewithoutYou, Seahaven and Caravels at Union Transfer

The local independent and experimental mewithoutYou will join post-hardcore band Touché Amoré as their co-headlining trek across North America touches down at Union Transfer this Saturday. Indie punk rock outfit Seahaven and the Nevada-based Caravels are also in the night’s lineup.

Band of Brewers: Vol. 2 featuring Sly Fox, Yards, Victory, Weyerbacher, Neshaminy Creek, Philadelphia Brewing and Troegs at World Café Live

Coming off the success of last year’s Band of Brewers, a number of local breweries will once again compete in a good old-fashioned battle of the bands. Each brewery’s band will perform three songs of their choosing, to be judged by both the crowd and a panel of celebrity judges (including JUMP’s very own publisher, G.W. Miller III). A great lineup of local craft beers will also be available and part of the proceeds will go to charity of the winning band’s choosing. See, I told you there would be beer.

Weekender, Raccoon Fighter and Travis J and The Rhinestones at The Fire

Since its debut EP Spanish Peaks was released last year, Philadelphia psychedelic rock/pop band Weekender has been garnering a steady following of local fans and critics alike. Weekender will be joined by Brooklyn indie rock act Raccoon Fighter and Travis J and The Rhinestones.
